Baldrige Awards Celebrate Organizational Performance

President Bush recognizes recipients at White House
By Jeanie Casison
President George W. Bush personally recognized the recipients of the 2007 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award at a private reception held at the White House on Wednesday, April 23. This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the prestigious Baldrige Award established by Congress to enhance the competitiveness and performance of U.S. businesses. It is the first time in the award's history that nonprofit organizations have been among the recipients. The American Society of Quality (ASQ) has been the sole administrator of the award since 1991 and their advocacy efforts resulted in the President's personal participation.
"The Baldrige Award is the only presidential award in the United States for organizational achievement and performance excellence. It's quite difficult to get. Generally, it requires many, many years of commitment to organizational improvement," says Kay Kendall, member of the board of ASQ and former judge of the Baldrige Awards. "There are always best practices to learn from the award recipients. There are seven categories of focus: leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, data analysis and information management, workforce focus, value creating process and results. It is a very, very rich model."
The five winners are PRO-TEC Coating Co., Leipsic, Ohio (small business); Mercy Health System, Janesville, Wisconsin (healthcare); Sharp HealthCare, San Diego, California (healthcare); City of Coral Springs, Coral Springs, Florida (nonprofit); and the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC), Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey (nonprofit).
