Well-thought out design fosters focus, collaboration, learning and socialization at top performing organizations, according to the recently released 2008 U.S. Workplace Survey. The nationwide study, commissioned by Gensler, an international design, planning and consulting firm, shows a direct correlation between organizational design and overall business performance. Specifically, companies with effective environments which promote the knowledge economy are experiencing higher levels of employee engagement, brand equity and profit, with profit growth up to 14 percentage points greater than those with less effective work environments.
Another significant finding of the Gensler survey is that top companies design workplaces that are 80 percent effective, while average companies achieve only 64 percent efficiency. Additionally, 86 percent of top-performing companies ranked their spaces effective for collaboration, compared to 72 percent at average companies and up to 14 percentage points higher for focus, learning and socializing.
As for employee engagement, the Gensler survey shows that 82 percent of respondents from top performing companies reported that they were highly satisfied or satisfied with their workplace, while 43 percent of respondents from average performing companies expressed similar sentiments.
