Recognize to Rebuild: Employee Trust in Leadership
November 08, 2007
By Anne Marie Lee

A case study from Maritz Incentives (www.maritzincentives.com)

Situation: After a major organizational restructuring, the client, a major pharmaceutical company, recognized the need to rebuild employee trust in leadership and overall employee morale. While it had used reward and recognition (R&R) programs in the past, it now needed to consolidate all programs into a single, Web-based platform, with consistent criteria for recognition across all business units, specifically to:

• Recognize positive results and behaviors
• Encourage broad participation at all levels
• Support and reinforce cultural change
• Spotlight role models and share success stories

Solution: The client chose Maritz to help them build the R&R solution based on the company's specific experience in Workforce Environments, their speed to launch and ease of adapting its platform to different business groups and their expansive awards mix.

Together, Maritz and the client developed an enterprise recognition program that would support the goal of encouraging employees to display leadership behaviors such as:

• Shared accountability and transparency
• Cross-functional teamwork and collaboration
• Listening and learning
• Benchmark and continuous improvement
• Coaching and developing others
• Displaying business integrity

The program combined Maritz Recognition Manager with a sales incentive program and included train-the-trainer support. It was rolled out to 14,500 employees across multiple business units and supported the sales of a broad range of products.

Results:

As a result, program participation has exhibited an upward trend since program launch in August of 2004.
Since the program launch, 14,836 participants have been recognized and 40 percent of award nominations submitted recognized "Cross-functional Teamwork and Collaboration." Overall, recognition of "Shared Accountability and Transparency" has increased by 55 percent since program launch. The program's success was expanded to include International Recognition in early 2006.
