R2-D2 Home Theater Gets Upgrade
You may or may not have known that a home theater system in the shape of R2-D2, the android from Star Wars, is available from Hammacher Schlemmer in New York. But now the DLP projector has been upgraded. Its former 1000:1 contrast ratio has been upgraded to 1,500:1, and the resolution of 800 x 600 pixels is now 1024 x 768. It retails for $2,800.
The projector is in his head, of course, and a DVD/CD player resides in one of his arms, and a docking station for an iPod in his rear plays music through 20-watt speakers.
InFocus Releases WorkBig IN12 Projector
InFocus, a digital projection company in Wilsonville, Ore., has released its latest in a line of what it calls "ultra-mobile" projectors. The WorkBig IN12 projector is 1.7 inches wide and weighs 3.9 pounds, has a contrast ratio of 1800:1, and a 2,000-lumen lamp.
The IN12 will be available in late August and will retail for $1,249.
New Book Makes Scamming Easier
Okay, it could also make it easier to tell when you're being scammed. Management consultant Nicholas Strange, who worked at McKinsey before joining Ingersoll Engineers, has written a book that explains 57 ways to present information that makes it look…well, however you want it to. Smoke and Mirrors: How to Bend Facts and Figures to Your Advantage shows how to use charts or diagrams or almost any data so that it supports whatever position you've taken.
The book uses examples from British and American newspapers, magazines, TV and government agencies. The publisher's Web site says that the book will teach readers how to massage a message "without fibbing outright."
Best of all, you get to monitor your own conscience and risks: Each of these techniques gets a Potential Deceit Quotient and a Sore Thumb Discount (as in, how obvious it is). The book will be available from A&C Black in September.
