Camera Lucida
November 12, 2008
Panasonic unveils the future of the point and shoot—just in time for the holidays.
By Jeanie Casison

There is no shortage of new cameras on the market this holiday season. But among the surfeit, Panasonic's just-released LUMIX DMC-G1, the world's first Micro Four Thirds System camera, stands out.

The lightweight interchangeable lens camera comes in multiple color options and weighs about half as much as a standard digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. What sets it apart is its hybrid nature: it is fully loaded with features that both novice and more experienced shooters will appreciate, such as a new high-contrast auto focus system and Intelligent Exposure. A free angle 3.0-inch LCD screen allows users to see manual adjustments as they are being made.

The beauty of the innovative model is the way it combines the power of a DSLR with the user-friendly feel of a basic point-and-shoot digital camera. With the LUMIX DMC-G1, users get the best of both worlds: manual controls and professional-quality images (a high-resolution 1,440,000-dot equivalent), plus a super-compact design and with intuitive features. This is the trend-setter of 2009.

The model releases in mid-November at a suggested retail price of $799.95.
