Hanover Hospital's Gerry Post shares how he got his successful start in the training field—and how you can do the same.
Training: What was your first job out of college? Gerry Post: A high school teacher.
Training: How did you get into the training field? GP: I took a position at an electric utility since I had an education background. I worked in the QA department. I was asked to do training for the department.
Training: Why did you become involved in this field? GP: I love teaching.
Training: Is there anything you wish you had known about this field before working in it? GP: More about business—how to relate training to the bottom line—and being able to understand business and its vocabulary.
Training: What advice would you give to those aspiring to do what you do? GP: Learn to wear at least three hats. For example, know business, organizational development, training or some combination of the three. Don't just rely on "training" or stand-up instruction—you'll improve your marketability that way.
Training: What are some of the challenges you've had to overcome, and how did you? GP: Demonstrating value and relating everything to benefit the bottom line. I overcame by building relationships with leadership and learning how to calculate ROI for learning events.
