Three Moves Ahead
March 19, 2008
What Chess Can Teach You About Business—Even If You've Never Played
By Margery Weinstein

In unpredictable economic times like these, your next move had better be a good one. Figuring out what that move will be is the challenge. It turns out all those modern business self-help books may be inferior to a game that's been played for 1,000 years—chess, according to Bob Rice, Wall Street veteran, entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and author of "Three Moves Ahead: What Chess Can Teach You About Business—Even If You've Never Played."

For those skeptical that chess is helpful with anything other than impressing the country club set, the book makes its case with examples illustrating the relevance of classic chess techniques in real world business dealings. Concepts such as "first mover," "bad bishops," "exchange sacrifices," and "lucky or good and strong squares" rarely are discussed in the office, but Rice says successful executives use the logic behind these moves, "whether they know it or not," to create strategy, manage people, and make decisions.
