Enough Just to Survive?
January 08, 2010
If your business survived the recession, is it enough of a feat to sit back and rest for a while? Many of us think so, but one author of a recently-released book explains why, beyond being lazy, that strategy is flawed.

In his new book, "Survive to Thrive: Sustaining Yourself, Your Brand, and Your Business from Recession to Recovery," Philip H. Geier, Jr., aims to offer an insider's view of the people whose ideas, brands, and advertising strategies shaped global consumer culture—including the ideas that worked and the ones that didn't.

He also describes what he calls a "perfect storm" of business troubles. Strategies for overcoming such disasters include:

• Maintain your long-term vision while adapting to current reality.

• Understand when to innovate and when to stick with the "tried and true."

• Communicate your corporate strategy and execute it with discipline.

• Use strategic creativity to build brands and grow market share.

Geier says motivating employees has never been more critical than in today's economy. He says the value of human resources has been greatly underestimated, and that having the right person in HR leadership can make a huge difference in a company's success. He also explains why applying the right marketing principles to continually emerging platforms is more important than ever.

"Success is possible in any economic climate," he says. "But today you need more than the right products, people, and ideas. You also need the right strategies, motivation, and execution."
