Frontline Motivation
September 06, 2007
By Margery Weinstein

Frontline workers less than inspired? Workplace happiness and customer care expert JoAnna Brandi of Boca Raton, FL-based JoAnna Brandi & Company, offers some tips:

• Write down four words: money, opportunity (growth and challenge), recognition, and lifestyle, Brandi advises. Rank them one through four in the order of importance. "Be sure to share this test with your team, as well, and to encourage people to share their results," she says.

• Authority can be a motivator for World War II, or "traditionalist," employees, but not necessarily so for employees of other ages. Generation X workers more often are motivated by work/life balance; baby boomers tend to look for meaning in their work; and Generation Y often is inspired by recognition.

• Get to know your employees to find out their individual goals. One may love recognition in the company newsletter, while another may be motivated more by opportunities for growth and challenge.
