Eye Care Professionals See Training
December 09, 2009
It's comforting to think your eye care professional can see the tasks of his job clearly enough to give you improved vision, and monitor your oracular health. To make that more likely, eye care personnel met in San Francisco in late October for a continuing education (CE) and certification event for ophthalmic technicians.
The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) held its 37th Annual Continuing Education (ACE) program October 23 to 27, as a way for eye care personnel to earn continuing education credit, network with industry professionals, and discover emerging techniques in ophthalmology.
Incorporated in 1969, JCAHPO says it was established to offer opportunities in education and certification to ophthalmic allied health personnel. JCAHPO's mission, the organization explains, is to enhance the quality and availability of ophthalmic patient care by promoting the value of qualified allied health personnel and by providing certification and education.
The organization says it began its series of Annual CE events in 1971 to unite ophthalmic professionals in the pursuit of better education and training.
"This year's program was a fantastic display of the level of commitment and desire for professional development among ophthalmic personnel," notes JCAHPO President William H. Ehlers, MD. "Despite economic woes, this year's turnout was high, the enthusiasm was great, and attendees took advantage of everything the program offered."
Nearly 1,900 ophthalmic professionals, and more than 350 volunteer instructors, participated in this year's CE event. JCAHPO's ACE program provides basic to advanced level courses, wet labs, and workshops. The program is designed to serve as a platform for lectures on new innovations in treatment, equipment, and techniques to raise the level of patient care. More than 330 class hours, 60 hands-on workshops, and 40 new courses were available this year, providing attendees with training and exposure to new information.
"ACE is the culmination of course development, planning, and rigorous scheduling to make sure attendees are provided with continuing education resources that are useful and capture their attention," says Ehlers. "It's exciting and full of opportunities to develop skills and knowledge personnel can apply in their daily work schedule."
Next year's ACE program will be held in Chicago October 15 to 18.
